Nekoma Refuge
This project introduced me to adaptive reuse of an abandoned missile base in Nekoma, ND. Our professor charged us with developing a refuge of some type to be built on, in, or under the remains of what once was the Northern-most anti-missile defense base in the United States. Due to cut in federal funding, the site was abandoned only 9 years after beginning construction on the barracks, missile silos, and other defensive technology bunkers. My group chose to turn this site into a veteran rehabilitation refuge, in honor of the sites given history. The main building would act as a physical, mental, and social rehabilitative center. By providing a space for soldiers returning from war to better re-acclimate to society, these veterans will have a chance to connect with others with similar experience as well as develop the necessary skill needed to succeed in the workplace and at home. In particular, I was in charge of the wetland research, campus design, and post production tasks such as renderings, board layout and graphic design.
